From Yorkshire to Bloomsbury - and back again

Join me for an hour-long illustrated online exploration into the world of Marie Hartley, Ella Pontefract and Joan Ingilby, a trio of groundbreaking writers, artists and museum-makers who produced influential books and art celebrating Yorkshire's landscapes, and pioneered the preservation of the region's agricultural, cultural and textile heritage. We’ll take a deep dive into Hartley’s student days as a contemporary of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth at Leeds College of Art in the 1920s, their time living round the corner from Virginia and Leonard Woolf in 1930s Bloomsbury, and explore how their identity and experiences as women shaped the way they engaged with land, people and places across the north of England.
